Ink-silver, sky-green, the bubble hung over Harry's head before it burst. Hogwarts, the lake they had crossed in a boat, the kiss, warm fingers brushed his cheek – bubble, bubble burst.
The world, what he made of it, solid-true-base, salt-spray on his face and water in his lungs – it was Harry's, his to grasp, like coming up from the white world of King's Cross into this world, coming up for a breath of air.
The world was what he made of it. Harry reached, taking, and grabbed Snape's fingers and pulled him up. The world was what they made of it.
-----
"Foolish." From a great distance, the words echoed and echoed. Harry held someone's hand and that was what mattered – it was important, though he hardly remembered why.
Like dark chocolate and honey, like Fortescue's best sundae, the voice washed over Harry. He had known it before, had known it in another world or another life. Death was the next great adventure. Someone had told him that.
There was something he had to do, something that remained undone. He had not dreamed it – he had not. Harry's fingers clenched around the hand he was holding and he pulled it closer, closer.
-----
Snape was there, tall and dark in the white room, when Harry woke. "You – you're–"
Putting a finger on Harry's lips, Snape cut him off. "Foolish boy, what have you done? What have you risked?"
He was too thin, but he was there. The dreams and the lost world, those were gone. Harry grasped Snape's hand, holding him like his last breath of air. "You're alive."
The world spun on its axis and steadied again. Snape was scowling and summoning the healers, all trace of tenderness wiped from his face. He hadn't changed – all was well with the world.
