"Idiot," Snape said. He turned Harry around, aiming the telescope for him. "Can you not tell the difference between a planet and an asteroid?"

"I – well, I never –"

The telescope wobbled, and Harry saw a blur of bright sparks, silver-white against the dark. His hands shook, and he leaned against Severus.

"Seven years of education wasted."

Snape's hands were cold, but his lips were warm on Harry's neck. "Those, my Gryffindor, are asteroids."

He crumpled the parchment and then smoothed it out again. A flicker of magic, not enough to be detected, removed the ink.

Daylight was dying, shadows rushing in through the window. Severus reached for a candle and hesitated, wary of the light.

Dear Mr. Potter, he wrote and stopped.

The pale ivory parchment faded to gray in the dusk, and he closed his eyes. He set aside his quill, the ink dry and useless.

Severus wrapped the parchment around the heavy gold locket and gave the package to his owl.

"You promised, Severus," Draco said. "You promised."

His eyes closed, his mouth set, Severus turned away from Harry. "Yes. I do."

"Can you think of nothing but your simpering wife and the sickly parasite cursed with your blood? Some of us are here for real work."

Severus ignored Albus's reproving looks. He shoved the vial at Potter and stalked away to stand in the shadows for the meeting.

The chain glows bright with a hundred hexes, a beacon in the dimness. Crouching, not daring to move, muscles stiff in the cold, he unsnarls the hexes one by one.

A last golden flare, and the magic slips away. Severus waits for hours, until the last pedestrian has passed, before darting out to retrieve the locket.

It is cold in his fingers, this treasure to both sides. "Happy birthday," he whispers to himself, and Disapparates into the night.
